Accepting versus Discerning

It seems that we are almost constantly having internal battles within ourselves between accepting someone we have met in our life and being discerning about who to befriend. This is more so when it comes to individuals that we meet rather than events or happenings. Why is this so? This is because we know that we cannot control the external circumstances surrounding our lives but we can decide the people who come into our lives.

So, how do we determine the individuals in our life then? While it’s true that most extroverts are usually more receptive to social acquaintances while the introverts are more guarded, I think it’s best to ignore the temperaments and personalities of individuals while looking at social interactions in a general manner. It’s usually best to be accepting to people that we meet but precautions should still be taken. With time, the personalities of the individuals usually reveal themselves.

Being accepting of things and people (while taking the necessary precautions) enables one to be relaxed when making friends, thus not appearing too tense.  It also opens up new opportunities for potential friendships.  In addition, it enables rapport between working colleagues and it encourages collaboration between friends.

Therefore, while there have been an increased number of reports in the media when it comes to frauds and scams, I still believe that we should be accepting of the world as long as we take the necessary precautions.
